Imagine this: you’re at work, in the middle of your regular day, when someone says, “Leave everything behind and follow me.” No details, no guarantees, just a promise of something bigger. Would you do it?
This is exactly what happened to Simon Peter and Andrew in Matthew 4. They were fishing—just another day on the job—when Jesus walked up and said, “Follow me.” And immediately, they left their nets, their boats, and their whole way of life.
Why would anyone make such a bold move? Because following Jesus isn’t just about a career change; it’s about a kingdom call.
Jesus’ Invitation: Follow Me
“Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.”
—Matthew 4:19
When Jesus said, “Follow me,” He wasn’t offering a side hustle or a tweak to their existing lives. He was inviting them into something entirely new. Following Him meant leaving behind what they’d built—careers, security, even family—and stepping into His mission.
This wasn’t a small ask. Peter and Andrew were commercial fishermen, which was a stable and respectable job in their time. Yet, when Jesus called, they immediately left their nets behind. Why? Because His words carried authority, and His promise of transformation was compelling: “I will make you fish for people.”
This wasn’t just about changing what they did—it was about changing who they were and why they lived.
For us, following Jesus means the same: Reorienting our lives around His mission and trusting Him to transform us from the inside out.
What Are You Holding Onto?

The Kingdom Is Bigger Than You
Jesus didn’t call these fishermen into an abstract spiritual journey. He called them into a kingdom—a movement that brings healing, hope, and transformation.
As Jesus began His ministry, He preached, healed the sick, and welcomed the outcasts. His message wasn’t just about personal salvation; it was about a complete reorientation of the world:
- Broken people were made whole.
- Outsiders found belonging.
- The hopeless discovered purpose.
The same kingdom is at work today. When we say “yes” to Jesus, we become part of this movement. It’s no longer about building our own rule and reign—it’s about joining His.
What’s Stopping You?
Peter, Andrew, James, and John didn’t hesitate when Jesus called. Their response was immediate because they saw the authority in His words and the promise of His kingdom.
What about you? What’s standing in the way of your “yes”?
- Are you holding onto a career or possession that feels too hard to leave?
- Do fear and uncertainty make you cling to the safety of your plans?
- Is there something God has been nudging you to walk away from, but your response has been anything but immediate?
Let me encourage you: The kingdom of heaven is near. Jesus invites you to step out of your plans and priorities and into His mission. When we let go of our nets—whatever they may be—we find a purpose greater than anything we could build on our own.
